Illinois is home to over 100 caves, with Monroe County hosting the most. Illinois Caverns, the state's only commercially operated cave, was first opened in 1901. Despite early efforts to attract tourists, it closed in 1907. Purchased by the state in 1985, the cave features stunning formations and unique wildlife.
