Get Your Kicks

Known as the “Mother Road,” Historic Route 66 was established in 1926 as one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System, stretching over 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica. This iconic route played a major role in American history, serving as a symbol of freedom, migration, and adventure during the 20th century. Illinois marks the starting point of Route 66, and the road winds through charming towns, classic diners, and quirky roadside attractions throughout Downstate. Today, it continues to draw travelers from around the world seeking a nostalgic journey through America's heartland.

Located just minutes from downtown St. Louis in Madison, Illinois, World Wide Technology Raceway (formerly Gateway Motorsports Park) is a premier motorsports complex that has evolved significantly since its inception. Originally established as a drag strip in 1967, the facility expanded over the years to include a 1.25-mile oval track, a 2.0-mile road course, and a state-of-the-art karting facility. After a period of closure, the raceway was revitalized in 2011 by local businessman and former racecar driver Curtis Francois, transforming it into a venue that now hosts major events across NASCAR, INDYCAR, and NHRA series.

In celebration of Route 66's rich heritage, the raceway hosts the annual Celebration of 66 Fest, coinciding with the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 INDYCAR Series race. This festival features live performances from iconic '90s rock bands such as Soul Asylum, Cracker, and Sponge, offering attendees a blend of high-speed racing and nostalgic music . Additionally, the Route 66 Rockabilly Rod Reunion, held in late May, brings together vintage drag racing enthusiasts with events like the Nostalgia Drag Racing League's competitions, showcasing front-engine top fuel dragsters and nitro funny cars, complemented by classic car shows and live rockabilly music . These events encapsulate the spirit of Route 66, merging its historical significance with contemporary motorsport and cultural festivities.
